Replacing Old Sliding Wardrobe Doors: A Brisbane Homeowner’s Guide
By the Brissy Wardrobes & Sliding Doors team · Updated October 2026
Many Brisbane homes still have their original wardrobe doors: heavy mirrors with tired frames, doors that scrape along the floor or jump off the track. The good news is that in most cases you don’t need a whole new wardrobe. Replacing just the sliding doors can make a bedroom look brand new, often in a single visit.

Signs it’s time to replace your sliding wardrobe doors
- Doors keep jumping off the track or are hard to slide
- Worn or broken rollers, or a bent or damaged bottom track
- Doors that scrape the carpet or leave uneven gaps when closed
- Chipped, cracked or dated mirror panels
- Faded, swollen or damaged board panels
- You’re renovating or getting ready to sell and want the room to feel fresh
Replace the doors, or the whole wardrobe?
If the wardrobe frame and the inside are in good shape, replacing only the doors is usually the quickest and most cost-effective way to update the room. If the shelving is sagging, the layout doesn’t work for you or there’s water damage inside, it may be worth updating the internals at the same time, or building a new built-in wardrobe.
What’s involved in replacing sliding doors
- Quote. For simple jobs we can often quote from your sizes and photos. For custom work we book a site visit.
- Final check measure. Before anything is made, we measure the opening on site and confirm the finish, colours and layout with you.
- Made to measure. Your doors are made to suit your opening, usually in around 2–3 weeks from the check measure.
- Installation. Our own team removes the old doors (if that’s on your quote), fits new top and bottom tracks, hangs and adjusts the doors, and cleans up before leaving.
How to measure your opening
For a quick quote, a rough measurement is all we need. We always do the final check measure ourselves before anything is made.
- Width: measure across the opening at the top, middle and bottom.
- Height: measure from the floor to the top of the opening on the left, in the middle and on the right.
- Note the floor type in front of the wardrobe: carpet, tiles, timber or vinyl.
- Take a photo of the whole wardrobe and a close-up of the top and bottom tracks.
Walls and floors are rarely perfectly square, so it’s normal for the three measurements to be slightly different.
A few common questions
Can new doors go on carpet?
Yes. We install on concrete, carpet and finished floors. On carpet we may fit a floor batten so the bottom track sits firm and level.
What happens to my old doors?
We can remove and dispose of them at an extra cost, which is shown on your quote. Old materials go to a recycling or waste facility.
Do you replace hinged doors with sliding doors?
We specialise in sliding wardrobe doors only. If your wardrobe currently has hinged doors, we can let you know whether the opening suits sliding doors when we measure.
Can I install them myself?
If you’re handy, our online shop offers made-to-measure DIY sliding doors. If you’d rather have it done for you, our own team handles the full installation.
